Makes a neat buttonhole in two layered 2 strand double knitted stockinette stitch fabric. Read the numbers specified in the format "over x st (y)" from left to right. x indicates how many double knitted stitches to bind off to create the hole, the more stitches, the larger the buttonhole. (y) refers to the type of stitches the bind off occurs over (e.g., rib, stockinette, etc.).

Leave the working yarn on hold and make standard bind off over the number of stitches specified in the pattern. Hold both main and contrast yarn together, and wrap cast on the same number of stitches that were bound off, plus 2 additional stitches. These extra stitches help create a smooth, seamless transition at the corners of the buttonhole. Slip the next stitch from the left hand needle to the right hand needle. Pass the last cast on stitch over the slipped stitch and off the needle, this secures the top left corner of the hole.

On the return row, 2 strand double knit across the cast-on stitchesfollowing your chart and stop before reaching the first of the two cast on stitches. Slip the next stitch from the left hand needle to the right hand needle, then pass the last cast on stitch over the slipped stitch. This secures the bottom right corner of the hole.

Transfer the double knit stitch to the left hand needle, devide it and double knit it following your chart. Continue to work your pattern.
